Red Room and Red Boxes

-Pay a Tribute to Henri Matisse-

In her episodic series of sculpture and installation works, Won Sil Kim employs a vocabulary of fragmentary organic forms-in this group simplified and abstracted human, floral or vegetal shapes-to evoke latent energies within the environment. Taking stimulus from Matisse's painting entitled "Red Room" and his late collages, the present work by Won Sil Kim features cut-out silhouette in primary hues. Against an over life -sized vinyl shape plays a miniature rectangular frame that acts as a second layer in depth as well as a virtual quotation mark for smaller abstracted silhouette shapes arranged within.
